The Black and White landscape of Brazilian Sierras
Sierras are a chain of mountains averaging meters, generally very ancient and washed by erosion.
Brazil may not be very well known by its high altitudes and only 0,5% of its territory is higher than the average 1.200 meters high, but there is a fascinating landscape of Brazilian highlands, where we can find tropical woods, rain forest, very well preserved parts of “Mata Atlantica”, big cliffs, high plateaus, grassland fields, valleys, waterfalls, rocks, and canyons. Brazilian Sierras are located mostly in the southern and southeastern parts of the Country and the largest are the Serra Geral, Serra do Espinhaço, Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar, all formed throughout the ice age and by rain, wind, waterfalls and river erosion.
This is like a trip to these regions, that may lack in altitude but are certainly one of the most beautiful parts of the planet. To photograph it, was for me a way to capture its magic and beauty that flows in nature's rhythm and shape - a way to register the balance of its elements making the magic and mystery of what is hidden inside us flourish.
It is also my way to call attention to preserve it. Photographer Victor Andrade has been traveling to Brazilian Sierras for almost 20 years, photographing for travel and environmental magazines and for his personal, authorial work. These are the images of this work taken mostly at Serra da Mantiqueira, between Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais states and also at Chapada Diamantina, Bahia state, Serra do Espinhaço and Serra da Canastra in Minas Gerais. The cameras were Hasselblad 501 C and 500 C/M with several lenses; the films were all black and white 120, 6x6 format. All copies were made by the photographer on Ilford Fiber paper, treated with selenium toner.
Brazilian Landscape
Brazil has a big diversity of landscapes that has fascinating travellers, adventures and conquers that came here searching opportunities and treasures, through the centuries, till now days when we can be surprised by a new and untouched landscape. We can find many different Eco systems from the seas, beaches, rivers, dunes, swamps to the top of its mountains, not the higher in the world, but certainly some of the most beautiful. It has rain forests, with part still untouchable “Mata Atlantica” forest, fields, waterfalls, lakes and rivers and some high peaks. They form spectacular walls and canyons from glacial era, shaped by rain and winds, stunning scenery at this amazing tropical country. To photograph nature for me is magic, brought me a new vision, a new way to feel and see the world. Increased the pleasure to be at the fields searching images, be in a trail, feel the smell of the woods, listen its noises, bathing under a waterfall and be quiet appreciating the sunset. Here are few scenes of this adventure and I want to share the moments and places I’ve been. Good trip Victor Andrade Photographer |
